Master Jou Tsung Hwa
1917 - 1998

The Patience T'ai Chi family deeply mourns the passing of one of its dearest friends, the beloved Master Jou Tsung-Hwa, who departed this life August 4th the victim of a tragic auto accident.

Master Jou was a gifted scholar and Mathematics professor. Although he was the author of numerous mathematical treatises, he was most known in America for his untiring promotion of the art of Tai Chi Chuan. Master Jou was the founder and director of The Tai Chi Farm in Warwick, New York. Master Jou conceived of a place where practitioners of Tai Chi Chuan could gather together to talk, exchange ideas and learn from one another in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Through much hard work and perseverance, he made his dream a reality with the Farm. Master Jou was known for his keen mind and willingness to share unselfishly any idea, technique or insight he had with anyone who was interested enough to ask. He was also the author of the classic The Tao of Tai-Chi Chuan, considered by many to be one of the finest works ever written on the subject. Master Jou once said,"Never do Tai Chi Chuan like you are reading a newspaper. Always do it as if you were studying for a test. This way you will achieve mastery." We here at PTC would like to send our most profound respects to Master Jou's family. His loss is truly a dark day for the art of Tai Chi and for humanity as a whole.

For More on Master Jou's Legacy, see William C. Phillips' Some Thoughts on the Passing of Two Masters.
